Co-Manufactured by Bell Helicopter and Boeing, this tilt rotor machine takes off and lands as a helicopter, but once in flight the engines convert to a turboprop airplane for high-speed and high-altitude capabilities. Flying twice as fast as a helicopter, the transport aircraft can carry up to 24 combat troops, 20,000 pounds internally, or 15,000 pounds externally. Equipped with two Rolls-Royce AE1107C Liberty turbo shaft, the engines capabilities are designed to fly 2100 miles with one in-flight refueling and can rapidly self-deploy to any location in the world. However, these advanced engines don’t come cheap, thus explaining why the price tag of a V-22 in FY 2014 ranged from $61.49 to $69.22 million.
